Abstract

Abstract

The works of French poet Charles Baudelaire (1821-1867), a revolutionary figure in European literature and one of the most influential figures in the Symbolist movement, were translated into Russian earlier than any other language. Long before the decadents made him a champion of their cause, he had been appropriated in Russia by the revolutionary left. Adrian Wanner analyzes Baudelaire's reception in Russia from 1852 (the date of the first Russian translation of his work) to the end of the Soviet era in 1991. He discusses Baudelaire's impact on Marxists, Russian populists, decadents, Symbolists, acmeists, and the modernist avant-garde within a general European context, and argues that Baudelaire became a many-faceted mythical presence in Russian literature.

Abstract

Counterfeit Capital is a comparative and interdisciplinary study exploring the unexpected yet essential relationship between irony and capital in the texts of Baudelaire and Marx. It argues for the renewed relevance of their work to contemporary thinking about the place of aesthetic and cultural experience in social and political life and articulates their poetic and philosophical innovations with their political statements in new and powerful ways. Through readings of Baudelaire's poetry and prose and Marx's Capital, this book illuminates their ongoing contribution to our understanding of themes and topics at the forefront of contemporary theoretical debate, including the effects of new technologies on the means of human action and transformation and the prospects for community and memory under capitalism. This book also revisits Walter Benjamin's interpretations of the philosopher and the poet. Rereading Baudelaire and Marx together with the unplumbed lessons of Benjamin's interpretations, it contributes to a growing body of interdisciplinary scholarship on the political dimensions and effects of language and to the current rethinking, in Marxist and post-Marxist theory, of conceptions of political time and agency.

Abstract

Abstract

The Paradox of Photography analyzes the discourse on photography by four of the most important modern French poets and theorists (Baudelaire, Breton, Barthes and Valéry). It stresses in particular the importance of this visual language for the development of both new forms of narrative and original critical studies on issues of representation in art. It also reflects upon the integration of photography within the domain of technical modernity while emphasizing its aesthetic identity stemming from the Western tradition of figurative painting.

Abstract

Diderot and Baudelaire were viewers of paintings, but they were first and foremost artistic creators. This book shows how their writings open the way to a modern conception of art, where the works of art are freely recreated in the imagination of the viewer. What we can call ‘traversing the painting’ consists of an emotional approach to the image, an approach which is sensitive to the powerful effects of line and colour, and the thoughts and dreams that they inspire. Art criticism thus springs as much from empathetic engagement with the artwork as it does from detachment from it. The reader of this book will discover the way in which Diderot and Baudelaire traversed the painting of their times, proposed new, timeless and inexhaustible visions to meditate on and marvel at.

Abstract

Great poets like Shelley and Goethe have made the claim that translating poems is impossible. And yet, poems are translated; not only that, but the metrical systems of English, French, Italian, German, Russian and Czech have been shaped by the translation of poems. Our poetic traditions are inspired by translations of Homer, Dante, Goethe and Baudelaire. How can we explain this paradox? James W. Underhill responds by offering an informed account of meter, rhythm, rhyme, and versification. But more than that, the author stresses that what is important in the poem-and what must be preserved in the translated poem-is the voice that emerges in the versification. Underhill's book draws on the author's translation experience from French, Czech and German. His comparative analysis of the versifications of French and English have enabled him to revise the key terms involved in translating the poetic voice and transposing the poem's versification. The theories of versification from the Prague School of Linguistics, the French and Swiss schools of versification, and recent scholarship in metrics and rhythm in the UK and in the USA have been integrated into this synthetic but rigorously coherent approach to translating poems. The extensive glossary at the end of the book will prove useful for both students and teachers alike. And the detailed case studies on translating poems by Baudelaire and Emily Dickinson allow the author to categorize and appraise the various poetic and aesthetic strategies and theories that are brought to bear in translating Baudelaire into English, and Dickinson into French.
